So after 3 to 4 years of debating and putting off, I'm finally gonna get around to cleaning up the taillights and taillight panel.
Back when the car was new, my dad had alot of troubles with water in the trunk and he then used some silicone and went to town and sealed up the taillights. As well over the years, as the paint had faded or as rust appeared, (as mentioned in the Story Area), my grandfather would sand down the area and then paint it (with a brush). Between all the layers of paintbrush paint and a few applications of spraybomb spraypaint over the years, the paint was start to fall off, more rust was coming through and the panel was really starting to look awful. Time to clean up the taillight lens and taillight panel. |
How the drivers side appeared before I started ...
How the passengers side appeared before I started ...
Armed with an X-Acto Knife and some Razor Blades, I begin by cutting out the taillight which has been siliconed by my dad years ago.
While cleaning off the excess silicone and cleaning up the inside of the weatherstripping which was also used to seal the lights, I discovered some rust and a small hole.
After cleaning as best as I could, removing as much of the silicone as possible, I then prime it.
Not too to worried about how clean I got it, as if I ever do get the Quarter's replaced, I will also have the taillight panel replaced too. This task is being done so that I can clean it up from how it looked, as it was driving me nuts!! ... this is not a restoration :).
Same thing on the Passenger side now, cut out the taillights and clean it up. On the right is a pic of the home-made gaskets my dad made years ago, and then did a pretty good job with the silicone! : )
Some more rust and another hole discovered on the passenger side ... oh well ... cleaned up the backside of the panel and primed it.
So after getting the inside cleaned up, I got the outside all maskin' taped up and prime and painted it flat black for now as I didn't have a spraybomb with midnight green to use. Unfortunealy I was unable to have the digital camera to take pics of the processes.
As well, I put in a spare set of taillights as I have the other ones (which the lens are in mint and clear scratchless shape) downstairs as I cleaned them up and remove all the silicone from within them. Unfortunealy while cleaning the drivers lens, I snapped it in half, so I got some glue and glued it back together ... should work fine as the len housing will keep it from breaking again.
I spent over 6 years so far, with using GOO-AWAY to remove and clean up the lens and lens-housings ... almost done. Probably won't put them back in till after I get it all spraybomb'd green.
I'm so much happier with the new clean smooth look, altho it's still flat black, I am now able to look at the back of the car without getting upset.
